What the world needs now

Healthy strength. Practiced in community.

The world does not need men to be shamed out of masculinity or hardened into domination. It needs men formed into healthy, trustworthy, communal, accountable, life-giving masculinity.

“True Manhood is strength without domination. Conviction without control. Protection without possession. Leadership without erasure. Power in service to life.”

Rooted language

A word strong enough to hold weight.

*deru-

firm · solid · steadfast · tree

Ancient tree roots gripping moss-covered ground

When I call something True, I am reaching back.

Back to the old bones of the English language. Back to the Proto-Indo-European root deru- or dreu-, meaning firm, solid, steadfast. This is the same deep root that gives us words connected to strength, reliability, and rootedness, including the word tree.

In ancient usage, to be true was to be aligned, straight, sound, and worthy of trust. A true beam could hold weight. A true foundation could be built upon. True North could guide a traveler through darkness, distance, and disorientation.

That is the spirit I am invoking.

When I say True Manhood, I am speaking of manhood like a tree that is sound, rooted, reliable, and life-giving. I am speaking of a masculinity strong enough to hold responsibility, tender enough to honor life, honest enough to face itself, and communal enough to serve something larger than the self.

A tree does not argue its value relative to other plants. It stands. It grows. It bears fruit. It offers shade in times of scorching heat. It strengthens the soil around it and becomes a place where life can gather.

That is the kind of truth I am pointing to.

True Manhood is strength without domination.Conviction without control.Protection without possession.Leadership without erasure.Power in service to life.

True Manhood is not a claim of male superiority. It is not an argument for domination, control, hierarchy, hardness, emotional starvation, or the shrinking of anyone else’s humanity. True Manhood is a healthy framework for timeless masculinity, one that teaches men to become fully themselves while honoring every other person’s right to become fully themselves.

It forms men inwardly and outwardly.

Inwardly, these principles shape how a man understands himself, governs himself, heals himself, strengthens himself, and grows himself. Outwardly, they shape how a man honors the gifts, guidance, dignity, wellbeing, and becoming of other people, including women, children, elders, brothers, strangers, and the wider human family.

True North can guide a traveler through darkness, distance, and disorientation.

The seven pillars

A framework men can practice.

Seven principles for becoming safer, wiser, more loving, more accountable, more communal, more courageous, and more alive.

01

Belonging

True Manhood is communal.

A True Man is formed in relationship and helps others feel rooted, remembered, respected, and received.

We do not live healthy lives alone. True Manhood is rooted and righted in the soil of Brotherhood. It is in intentional small groups that men help each other name their edges, call forward their gifts, off-gas their frustrations, face their failures, and correct their course.

Strong men need strong men to reach their potential and stay aligned.

Belonging means a True Man understands that he is formed in relationship. He is strengthened by proximity, consistency, intimacy, and mutual support. He does not mistake isolation for independence or emotional distance for strength. He knows that a man without meaningful connection becomes vulnerable to distortion, despair, and self-deception.

But Belonging also looks outward.

A True Man does not create circles where only people who think like him, look like him, move like him, or mirror him are welcome. He becomes the kind of man who helps other people feel rooted, remembered, respected, and received. He understands that healthy community is not built through sameness. It is built through the courageous honoring of life in its many forms.

True Manhood begins with the recognition that we belong to one another.

02

Gifting

True Manhood celebrates the uniqueness of the individual as beneficial for the whole.

A True Man offers what is uniquely his while making room for others to offer what is uniquely theirs.

Every human being brings something only they can bring.

True Manhood sees uniqueness as divinely purposeful, contributing to the wellbeing of the entire community. We deploy our gifts in service, and we honor the gifts in others without shrinking or shaming.

Gifting means a True Man learns to recognize, cultivate, and offer what is uniquely his. He does not bury his brilliance, apologize for his calling, or withhold his contribution out of fear. He understands that his life carries medicine, meaning, insight, strength, creativity, humor, vision, skill, memory, and presence that the whole may need.

But Gifting also looks outward.

A True Man recognizes that every person carries a gift. Men carry gifts. Women carry gifts. Children, elders, friends, strangers, and even those who challenge us carry gifts. Because of this, a True Man does not force uniformity. He does not demand that others become smaller, quieter, softer, harder, more agreeable, more familiar, or more like him in order to be valued.

He honors difference as part of the divine design.

True Manhood teaches a man to offer his gift fully while making room for others to offer theirs.

03

Knowing

True Manhood trusts inner knowing.

A True Man trusts his own inner compass while encouraging others to trust their own.

We believe every human being carries an internal compass. Here, we honor gut feeling and deep knowing as sacred data.

Instead of control, we choose curiosity. Instead of dominance, we choose respect for personal discernment. There is no hierarchy of worth, only a deep reverence for the truth each person is responsible for discovering and living.

Knowing means a True Man learns to trust the quiet authority within himself. He listens for the wisdom beneath fear, performance, pressure, and noise. He pays attention to his body, his conscience, his spiritual sense, his lived experience, and the deep interior guidance that often speaks before language arrives.

But Knowing also looks outward.

A True Man understands that other people have an internal compass too. This is one of the ways True Manhood dissolves domination at the root. A man who honors the inner guidance of others cannot easily justify controlling them. He cannot casually override their discernment. He cannot treat his perspective as the only perspective with authority.

This is especially important in how men relate to women.

True Manhood requires a man to honor a woman’s internal knowing, her sense of timing, her desires, her boundaries, her intelligence, her interpretation of her own life, and her sacred right to be guided from within.

A True Man trusts his own inner compass while encouraging others to trust their own.

04

Listening

True Manhood listens generously.

A True Man listens generously because to provide what is needed, he must discover what is needed.

True Manhood requires listening in a way that clearly expresses that the person speaking matters to us, that we genuinely want to understand them, and that we respect that they are the primary authority on their own life.

When we listen without rushing to give advice, correct, dominate, diagnose, or rescue, we make space for the person speaking to consult their own deep knowing. In moments when we are asked directly for insight, we offer our perspective as a possible path, never as a replacement for the listener’s own discernment.

Listening means a True Man develops the discipline of presence. He learns to stay open when another person is speaking. He listens beneath words for meaning, beneath frustration for need, beneath pain for longing, beneath silence for what has not yet felt safe enough to emerge.

A True Man listens because he believes the person before him has dignity. He listens because he understands that love without attention becomes theory. He listens because people reveal what they need when they feel safe enough to be truly heard.

In order to provide what is truly needed, men must listen generously enough to discover what is truly needed.

Listening is how strength becomes service.

05

Guarding

True Manhood prioritizes wellbeing and protects from harm.

A True Man ensures the wellbeing of his community and protects it from harm.

Guarding holds two sacred responsibilities: ensuring wellbeing and protecting from harm.

Ensuring wellbeing means a True Man takes responsibility for the condition of life around him, beginning with the condition of his own life. His body, mind, spirit, relationships, home, habits, and emotional state matter because he understands that an unwell man often leaks his pain into the lives of others. He cultivates his own wellbeing so that he can become a source of wellbeing, steadiness, safety, and strength in the lives of those around him.

Protecting from harm means a True Man refuses to be passive in the presence of danger, cruelty, degradation, exploitation, or preventable suffering. He cultivates safe ground instead of battleground. He is watchful without being paranoid, strong without being reckless, and fierce without being cruel. He may be slow to escalate, but he is quick to extinguish.

A True Man protects the wellbeing, dignity, safety, freedom, and flourishing of other people. He is not merely a defender of territory. He is a guardian of life. He watches for harm. He interrupts cruelty. He refuses to profit from suffering. He does not confuse protection with possession or care with control.

Guarding means a man becomes safe strength.

He becomes the kind of man whose presence helps others breathe, soften, rise, tell the truth, and live without fear.

06

Thanking

True Manhood is grateful and faithful.

A True Man lives anchored by gratitude for what has happened and faith for what is coming.

We hold strong to the settled knowing that life is working for us and through us. This is not a Pollyanna stance. It is a providential certainty.

Instead of believing that life merely happens to us and that we are powerless beneath its weight, we remember our creative agency. We act from the conviction that we are participants in the unfolding of our lives, not passive recipients of circumstance.

Thanking means a True Man practices gratitude for what has already happened and faith for what has yet to happen. Gratitude and faith are the same energy facing two directions. Gratitude looks backward and says, “Thank you.” Faith looks forward and says, “Thank you in advance.”

A True Man clothes himself in this energy like emotional armor.

He develops an inner atmosphere that helps him withstand the torrential winds of worry. When the ground of life shakes, he may feel the shaking, but he does not surrender his agency to it. He steadies himself, remembers, responds constructively, and moves toward the reality he desires to create.

A grateful and faithful man becomes a stabilizing presence. His faith does not erase another person’s pain. His gratitude does not rush someone else’s grief. Instead, his settled spirit helps create room for hope. He becomes the kind of man who can stand beside someone in uncertainty without collapsing into fear, control, or despair.

Thanking is the practice of living anchored.

07

Becoming

True Manhood is radically honest, accountable, and always becoming.

A True Man owns his impact, repairs what he can, and remains apprenticed to a better version of himself.

We speak the truth, own our choices, repair what we break, and commit to becoming better versions of ourselves tomorrow than we are today.

In this posture, trust is generated. Trust does not come from pretending we never fall. Trust comes from what we do when we fall. A True Man faces his shame, owns his impact, repairs what he can, learns what he must, and rises honorably.

Becoming means a True Man remains apprenticed to a better version of himself. He does not require perfection in order to walk the path. He requires willingness, humility, courage, and enduring determination.

But Becoming also looks outward.

A True Man makes room for others to grow. He does not freeze people forever at the site of their worst mistake. He honors accountability and transformation together. He tells the truth about harm while leaving room for repair. He understands that a healthy community must be strong enough to confront what is wrong and loving enough to call people toward what is possible.

True Manhood teaches men to become fully themselves while honoring everyone else’s unique journey to become fully themselves.

Belonging forms us.

Gifting expresses us.

Knowing guides us.

Listening connects us.

Guarding steadies us.

Thanking anchors us.

Becoming transforms us.
